Carl Wilkins was the only American aid worker who stayed in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. Everyone else evacuated. He stayed because he felt he couldn't leave the children at the orphanage he helped run. Over the following weeks, he talked his way past roadblocks, negotiated with militia leaders, and kept hundreds of people alive. Years later, someone asked him how he found the courage to face men who had done unthinkable things, to sit across a table from them and appeal to whatever was left of their humanity. Carl said it came down to something his faith kept pressing on him: that he himself had been shown a mercy he hadn't earned. Not a small mercy. A total one. And he couldn't hold that in one hand while holding a closed fist in the other. Most of us will never face anything close to what Carl faced. Our forgiveness happens in kitchens and parking lots and group texts that go sideways. But the arithmetic is the same. When we really understand the size of what God cancelled for us, we lose the ability to put a ceiling on what we're willing to cancel for someone else. The forgiven life is a life that keeps no running tab.
